Cowman's Butchers

"The shopping streets of Clitheroe are full of a pleasing sense that local endeavour has not yet been swept away by big names from big cities. Cowman’s, with its glorious array of local sausages, must be a particular treat," wrote David McKie in Great British Bus Journeys 2006.

This shop has been in the Cowman family for over a hundred years and free-range pork comes from John Seddons in Blackburn, and free-range eggs from Kenyons in Bamber Bridge. Beef and lamb is supplied by Bowland Foods and Cliff Cowman usually gets his fruit and vegetables from Clitheroe Market 100 yards away.

In the 1960s, Cliff’s father was ahead of his time, eschewing "rubbish and leftover meat scraps" for quality meat for his sausages. Cliff, now at the helm of the business, has continued the family tradition of creating award-winning sausages made with quality ingredients and prepared on-site with different flavours and textures – some that will surprise you.

Food for thought...

  • The sign in Cowman’s window says it all: "Our sausages contain no slurry, slurp or goo."
  • Cliff is a bit of a star. He has appeared frequently on local television and taught Steve Arnold (Ashley, the butcher in Coronation Street) how to make sausages. If your children recognise him, yes, he is the man who makes the sausages on national curriculum videos.
  • Phone Cliff in advance and he will cook special sausage samples for your group. The shop also offers cooked samples on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
